For Windows NT customers:
Support for Windows NT and Network Configuration

Southwestern Bell Internet Services supports the installation and configuration of our customized version of Netscape Communicator 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0. We do not support our version of Netscape Communicator 4.0 for Windows NT 3.51 or below, and we do not support our version of Netscape Navigator 3.0 or below for any version of Windows NT. We do not support non-customized versions of Netscape Communicator or Netscape Navigator or any other third-party software beyond providing network settings. Configuration instructions for Windows NT 4.0 are located below.

We also provide support for basic connectivity issues that may arise when using our version of Netscape Communicator 4.0. However, you must have the necessary network components installed. We are unable to support the adding or removing of components to your system.

Because of the complexity of LAN (Local Area Network) based computers, we are unable to support such computers beyond providing the appropriate network settings. We cannot make changes to the configuration of such computers under any circumstances. It is best to consult a network administrator for support of LAN based computers.

Windows NT 4.0: Configuring Remote Access Services and Dial-up Networking

The following instructions give an overview of the components used to connect to the Internet, then guide you, step-by-step, through the process of installing and configuring them.

Exercise caution when modifying your system configuration. Make note of current settings before making any changes, so that you may start over if necessary. You should be logged on as Administrator or have administrative rights before proceeding. Please have the Windows NT CD-ROM at hand. This document covers the following configuration steps:

  1. Configuring the TCP/IP Components
  2. Installing Remote Access Services
  3. Adding a Modem Driver for DUN
  4. Networks & Network Cards
  5. Creating a Dialup Phonebook Entry
  6. Configuring the Phonebook Entry
  7. Connecting to the Internet
  8. Making a Shortcut to the Connection
Please Note: This information is for users of Windows NT 4.0. It is not recommended to use these procedures with Windows NT version 3.51 or the 5.0 beta release.

Your connection to the Internet will use the following segments of the operating system:

  • The TCP/IP networking protocol is the language your computer will use to communicate on the Internet.
  • Remote Access Service (RAS) enables your computer to access a modem to connect to the Internet.
  • A Dial-up Networking (DUN) phonebook entry contains information needed to connect to the Internet.

A ) Configuring the TCP/IP Components

  1. Click on the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon. The Network screen will open.

If an installation wizard prompts you to install Networking at this time continue with the following steps, otherwise skip to section B.

  1. Check the box to specify that your computer will participate remotely using a modem.
  2. Click Next and continue to the protocol screen. TCP/IP will be selected as the default protocol.
  3. Continue clicking Next, accepting the defaults in all subsequent screens, until the installation wizard finishes. You will be prompted for the Windows NT CD to install TCP/IP. Do not enable DHCP when prompted.

B ) Installing Remote Access Services

Please make note of the current settings in the Network Control Panel. This information is crucial when connected to a Local Area Network (LAN). The Network configuration screen has 5 tabs to configure:

  • Identification - Identifies the computer with a name and a workgroup when on a network. It does not matter what these names are if this computer is not connected to a LAN.
  • Services - Installed programs used to help communicate with different types of networks. Remote Access Services allows use of a modem to connect to a network.
  • Protocols - Rules on how communication is done on a network. TCP/IP is required to communicate on the Internet.
  • Adapters - Hardware used to connect to a network. Your modem will not be listed here. If your workstation connects to a Local Area Network, there may be an entry in this field. Do not modify it.
  • Bindings - Maps the connections between the different services, protocols, and adapters. RAS will be bound to the WINS Client (TCP/IP), which is bound to the Remote Access WAN Wrapper.
    1. Select the Services tab of the Network configuration screen.
    2. Click the Add button.
    3. Select ‘Remote Access Service’ from the Select Network Service screen.
    4. Click OK.

You will be prompted to insert your Windows NT CD to install RAS. Continue with the install process.

C ) Adding a Modem Driver for DUN

Once Remote Access Services installs, you will be prompted to add a ‘RAS-Capable Device’ (your modem). Click Yes to continue.

The Install New Modem wizard will appear. You can choose to specify your modem manually or let Windows NT detect it. If you choose to install the driver supplied by the manufacturer it must be compatible with Windows NT.

Once the modem driver is installed, be sure the modem appears in the pull-down menu of the ‘Add RAS Device’ screen, and click OK.

The ‘Remote Access Setup’ screen will appear. This screen allows you to configure the modem connection.
  1. Click the Network button to bring up the ‘Network Configuration’ screen.
  2. Select TCP/IP only in the Network Configuration screen, then click OK.
  3. You will have returned to the Remote Access Setup window. Now, click the Configure button.
  4. Select ‘Dial Out Only’ or ‘Dial Out and Receive calls’. Click OK.
  5. Select Continue from the Remote Access Setup window, then Close from the Network screen.

Windows NT will configure the protocols and bindings automatically when you close the Network screen.

You have completed configuration of Remote Access Services. You will be prompted to restart the computer: click Yes to restart.

D ) Networks & Network Cards

If you are on a Local Area Network, contact your network administrator or Help Desk for assistance in configuring an Internet connection.

If your computer has a Network card, a configuration dialog will appear before you are asked to reboot.

Click Cancel at this point if you do not intend to communicate with other PCs on a local area network. Windows NT will warn that cancellation will disable TCP/IP. This action disables TCP/IP only for the network card, so you should click Yes.

E ) Creating a Dialup Phonebook Entry
  1. Open ‘Dial-up Networking’ icon by opening the My Computer icon.
  2. A prompt to add a ‘New Phonebook Entry’ will appear. Click OK to launch the 'Create New Phonebook Entry’ wizard.

If the Wizard does not launch automatically, click on ‘Create a New Phone Book Entry’.

  1. Give the entry a name.
  2. Place a check in the ‘I know all about phonebook entries’ checkbox, and click the Finish button.

The Phonebook entry configuration screen will appear. You can get back to this screen to perform modifications later by choosing More and ‘Edit entry and modem properties’ from the ‘Dial-up Networking Screen’.

  6. Select ‘Server assigned IP address’
  7. Select ‘Server assigned name server addresses’.
  8. Select ‘Use IP header compression’
  9. Select ‘Use default gateway on remote computer’.

SCRIPT tab:

You do not need a script to log on to SBIS. Leave this screen set to ‘none’.

SECURITY tab:

Check the option for ‘Accept any authentication, including clear text’.

X-25 tab:

Choose 'none' from the pull-down menu.

Click OK to exit and save the entries.

G ) Connecting to the Internet
  1. From My Computer, open Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Select your Internet connection from the pull-down menu, then click the Dial button.
  3. You will be prompted with a ‘Connect to…’ dialog box. Enter your user name and password. You may also want to check Save Password. Leave the domain field blank. Remember, passwords are case-sensitive.

If you need to change or remove the password later, click the ‘Unsave Password’ button on the Security tab of the ‘Edit entry and modem properties’ screen.

  1. Click OK when you are ready to connect. Your modem will dial, authenticate and log onto the network.
